Summary
As we will continue to see in the next chapter, the natural world, the biosphere of which we are a part, presents a huge opportunity to mitigate climate change. With better management of the land sector, our farms, forests, and wetlands can sequester more carbon and provide a stream of other benefits. The entrepreneurial market-based solutions described here hold great promise for bringing more capital to the table to improve land use. Like with all things in the natural world, itâs super complicated. The promise and the peril go hand in hand.
⢠Natural areas can either be a source or a sink of CO2. If managed improperly, the land sector will continue to be a net source of CO2 into the atmosphere. This would make stabilizing the climate an even steeper climb.
⢠Verification and incentive programs are complex and costly. More innovation is needed to truly scale to large areas in the order of hundreds of millions of acres in the US alone.
⢠Local conditions vary widely, and there are lots of different actors. One of the challenges of scaling is creating a framework that can be broadly applied. Regulators can help in this area by enabling standards.
Clearly, part of the climate change issue is we are pushing the limits of the land sector. Modern farming and forestry practices can degrade the landâs ability to absorb and store carbon. Market-based approaches to promote new practices hold promise as one part of the solution. The actions and innovation of the entrepreneurs, investors, and policy makers exemplified here are leading the way.
